Bad Credit Car and Truck Loans

Auto and Truck Financing

A typical scenario is that an individual who is shopping for either a new or used car or truck goes to a local dealer, finds the vehicle he or she desires, and then just signs on the dotted line of a finance agreement provided and recommended by the car dealership. Back up the truck! The odds are that the buyer is not getting the best or the cheapest loan available.

It is a pretty good bet that the dealership is going to get a "referral fee" when you finance your car or truck through their recommended lender. Want to guess who ends up paying that referral fee? Now, this isn't always the case. Some of the best loans are offered through some dealerships, but that isn't always true, and you need to know which is which before you sign your name.

Comparison shopping includes shopping for loans -- all kinds of loans. You do not have to take the loan that is recommended by a seller of anything…ever. You always have the right to arrange your own financing. It is easy, in the heat and excitement of the moment when you are buying a car or truck, just to take what is offered; but you do need to remember that the man or woman who has just sold you the car or truck of your dreams is first and foremost a salesperson. Their objective is to sell to you. First they sell the vehicle, and then they sell the financing for that vehicle.

The best advice is this: Before you go shopping for that car or truck, arrange the best loan that you can find for yourself. Until you sign your name on a dotted line, you are not obligated to take any loan so if the car dealership makes you a better offer, you can still take that deal.

Car and Truck Trade-in Values

I was just a kid. I didn't have much money, but I wanted a bicycle. There was no way that I could afford a new bike, so I started looking for a used bike. I found several offers, and I asked my dad to help me decide. He did. He looked each bike over carefully and then recommended one.

I asked him if he thought that the bike was worth what I was going to pay for it, and that's when he told me something that I have used as a measuring stick for buying, selling, and trading all my life. He said, "Everything is worth exactly what you can get for it." (He meant how much money you could sell it for is the real value of everything.)

That was true for bikes, and it's true for cars. There are some dealers that will go strictly by the Blue Book value to determine the trade-in value of your car when you are buying a new car or even another used car. Blue Book values are GUIDELINES! A great many factors go into determining the value of a car, and the Blue Book listing is only one.

All cars are not valued equally. A car that has been driven rough isn't worth as much as one that has only been driven by a little old lady to church on Sunday even if they are the same make, model, and color and have identical mileage.

Some cars are worth MORE than the Blue Book value, and then there are cars that are worth considerably less than the Blue Book value. There are those makes and models that have been plagued with problems from the first day they rolled off the assembly line, and the used ones can't be sold at any price. Nobody wants them.

So the value of the car or truck that you will use as a trade-in on a different vehicle is subjective. You might make a better deal by selling your old car yourself and getting a little more for it than you would as a trade-in. Remember, "Everything is worth exactly what you can get for it."

Drivers and Driving

Driving and Alcohol

We've made a little progress toward getting drunk drivers off our highways -- not enough yet, but we have made progress. MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) has had a great deal to do with the progress that has been made. MADD was formed in 1980 by Candy Lightner after her daughter, Cari, was killed by a repeat drunk driving offender.

The number of fatalities resulting from driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs in 1982 was 26,173 and accounted for a full 60% of all traffic deaths. In 2005 (the last year for which statistics are available), the number of fatalities resulting from driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs was down to 16,885 and accounted for only 39% of traffic deaths. That is good. That IS progress, but it isn't enough progress yet.

People of all ages drive drunk, but the group that is most often guilty of the offence are drivers between the ages of 21 and 24. The age group that comes just behind that age group is between the ages of 25 to 34. Of course, people of all ages and all walks of life are the victims of drunk driving. You don't have to be drunk to be a statistic. Sadly, it is often little children who make up a large percentage of the deaths attributed to drunk driving, and often it is a parent of the child who is driving under the influence and who causes the accident.

The bottom line here is that drinking and driving do not work well together. Mixing the two is a recipe for disaster. The problem could be completely eradicated if each person made the decision to NOT drive under the influence. That isn't likely to happen, so we (all of us) must continue to educate drivers, work toward laws that provide for harsher punishments when offenders are caught, and pray.
